Suarez 8 Game Ban
|
|
Liverpools Luis Suarez has been handed an eight-match ban and a 40,000 fine by the Football Association after being found guilty of racially abusing Manchester Uniteds Patrice Evra.
The Uruguay striker, 24, clashed with the France defender during the 1-1 draw at Anfield on 15 October.
Suarez, who denied the allegations, has 14 days to appeal against the decision.
He tweeted: Today is a very difficult and painful day for me and my family. Thanks for all the support.
Liverpool, who had backed their player throughout the case, said the club was very surprised and disappointed with the decision.
The six-day hearing, which concluded on Tuesday, was told Suarez used insulting words which included a reference to Evras colour.
A Liverpool statement said: We find it extraordinary that Luis can be found guilty on the word of Patrice Evra alone.
No-one else on the field of play - including Evras own Manchester United teammates and all the match officials - heard the alleged conversation between the two players in a crowded Kop goalmouth.
Liverpool added: It appears to us that the FA were determined to bring charges against Luis Suarez, even before interviewing him at the beginning of November.
Nothing we have heard in the course of the hearing has changed our view that Luis Suarez is innocent of the charges brought against him and we will provide Luis with whatever support he now needs to clear his name.
But Liverpool have questioned whether the FA also intend to charge Evra with making abusive remarks to an opponent.
The Anfield statement added: Evra admitted himself in his evidence to insulting Luis Suarez in Spanish in the most objectionable of terms.
Luis, to his credit, actually told the FA he had not heard the insult.
The FA statement added: The penalty is suspended until after the outcome of any appeal, or the time for appealing expires, or should Mr Suarez decide not to appeal.
The reason for this is to ensure that the penalty does not take effect before any appeal so that Mr Suarez has an effective right of appeal.
The Reds striker told media in Uruguay that he called him something his team-mates at Manchester call him.
Evra made his claims immediately after the match and was quoted as telling French TV station Canal Plus: There are cameras, you can see [Suarez] say a certain word to me at least 10 times.
The Frenchman reported his complaint after the game to match referee Andre Marriner who included it in his report.

Little Mix have ended the eighth series of The X Factor top of the pile after a tumultuous final weekend which saw controversial Amelia Lily booted out first on Saturday night (December 10th 2011) Lily had been tipped to win, although the result wouldve been tarnished given reports of fixing midweek after her winning single appeared for sale on music retailer Hmvs website. However that was not to be, and in the final reckoning the girls beat out solo artist and Gary Barlow protege Marcus Collins to become the first girl group to win the X Factor UK ever, a historic landmark made all the more impressive given that theyd only been formed in the boot camp stage of the competition. The win also meant that N-Dubz member Tulisa Contostavlos got a maiden victory on her debut as a judge and mentor in the show.
The girls - who sang En Vogue s Dont Let It Go and the Christmas carol Silent Night - told the Itv program, We are just so grateful and thankful to everyone who voted and to everyone backstage, with their mentor adding, I think I wanted them to win more than they did. Gracious in defeat, rival Collins commented Im really proud of myself and these girls really deserve it, theyre amazing.
Little Mix, who took 48.3% of the weekend vote, look set to go on to big things if the success of the last girl group to win a British reality singing contest is anything to go by: Girls Aloud took the Popstars: The Rivals crown back in 2002 and have gone to sell reach at least platinum status in the UK on each of their five albums. According to the UKs Daily Mail, the girls, Jesy, Perrie, Leigh-Anne and Jade could make up to 8 million from their debut album and tour.

Tram Racist Charged

A WOMAN, who was caught on video hurling racist abuse at black and asian passengers on board a south London tram, has been charged with racially aggravated assault, the British Transport Police said this morning (Nov 29).
Emma West from New Addington was arrested at her home last night (Nov 28) by British Transport police after shocking footage, which showed her tell non-white passengers to go back to where you come from, generated over two million views on YouTube in one day and became the most discussed topic on Twitter yesterday.
Weve arrested a 34yo woman for racially aggravated public order offence as a result of my tram experience video brought to our attn, the British Transport Police posted on their Twitter page this morning.
Weve charged Emma West (34) of New Addington with Racially Aggravated acts Section 4a. Shes due to appear at Croydon Mags Ct (Magistrates Court) later today, they later tweeted.
The 34-year-olds arrest comes after outraged members of the community joined together to call for authorities to find and apprehend West as the video circulated around the country.
Their anger also forced Croydon MP Gavin Barwell to comment on the incident, which took place in his constituency on Sunday night (Nov 27).
He told The Voice: I find both the language she used and the racist abuse of her fellow passengers, who it hardly needs to be said have as much right to be in this country as she has, disgusting.
Frankly it is people like this woman that the country would be better off without, he said.
It is believed that Twitter user @Willows70 was the individual who identified West, who was with her young child at the time of the incident.
She used Twiiter to tell news program London Tonight Her name is Emma West and she worked in the Dentist on Salcot Crescent in New Addington! Tramrant.
West will appear at Croydon Magistrates Court later today.

Smokin Joe Dies At 67
|
|
Boxing great Joe Frazier died late Monday night in Philadelphia after a brief battle with liver cancer.
Frazier, 67, was most famous for a series of classic fights vs. the great Muhammad Ali, who was his rival in and out of the ring for most of his career and after it came to an end.
The pair came to have a grudging respect for each other over the years, and Frazier even indicated he forgave Ali for hurtful comments he made about Smokin Joe in an apparent effort to hype their fights.
His family asked to be able to grieve on its own and would have more on our fathers homecoming celebration at a later time.
HBO fight analyst Larry Merchant, who became friendly with the ex-champ, said Frazier will be dearly missed.
This is a body blow to me because I knew him personally as well as professionally, Merchant told ESPN.coms Dan Rafael. I thought he was as honest and as real a fighter as there ever was. He followed in a tradition of (Jack) Dempsey and (Rocky) Marciano as the Warrior King.
Frazier, who hailed from Beaufort, South Carolina but lived mostly in Philly, was 32-4-1 with 27 knockouts in an outstanding career.
